House of the Dragon trailer teases Game of Thrones’ fiery past

“Gods, kings, fire, and blood. Dreams didn’t make us kings. Dragons did.”

HBO Max caught everyone by surprise this morning by dropping the first look at Game of Thrones‘ highly anticipated prequel series, House of the Dragon. Forget everything you think you know about Westeros and A Song of Ice and Fire. This new show takes place 200 years before the events of the original series, during the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of Dragons, so it’s unlikely we’ll see any familiar faces. That said, there are definitely some familiar elements in play.

Perhaps the most recognizable performer in this teaser is former Doctor Who star Matt Smith. He is playing Prince Daemon Targaryen, a fierce warrior who is also the brother of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine). However, if Daemon has any desire for his brother’s Iron Throne, then he’ll have to get past his niece, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy). She’s the king’s daughter and perhaps destined to become Westeros’ first queen if she can survive the challenges ahead.

House of the Dragon was co-created by A Song of Ice and Fire novelist George R. R. Martin and screenwriter Ryan J. Condal. It may be Martin’s world, but Condal will be the showrunner who brings Martin’s vision to life.

Rhys Ifans’ character, Ser Otto Hightower, is only identifiable in the teaser by the signet of the Hand of the King. That makes him one of the most important men in the Seven Kingdoms. And if his daughter, Lady Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), has her way, she will retain her family’s influence with the king.

HBO is reportedly considering another spinoff series centering on “the Sea Snake,” Lord Corlys Velaryon, who features heavily in House of the Dragon as Lord Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), Hand to Queen Rhaenyra, while Eve Best is playing his wife, Princess Rhaenys Velaryon. Rhaenys is the cousin of the king, and she also had a claim on the throne before she was passed over.

Sonoya Mizuno also co-stars in the series as Mysaria, with Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Graham McTavish as Ser Harrold Westerling, Ryan Corr as Ser Harwin Strong, Jefferson Hall as the twins Lord Jason Lannister and Ser Tyland Lannister, David Horovitch as Grand Maester Mellos, Matthew Needham as Larys Strong, Bill Paterson as Lord Lyman Beesbury, and Gavin Spokes as Lord Lyonel Strong.

House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2022.

HBO's House of the Dragon has taken its time getting to the real, fire-breathing drama at the center of its story. The Game of Thrones prequel's first season was largely a preamble — one that concluded with the shocking death of a character whose importance to the show's ostensible lead, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), was larger than it was to the audience. In the episodes since then, House of the Dragon has similarly said goodbye — in sometimes horrifyingly brutal fashion — to several of its supporting characters. All the while, it's done its best to make viewers feel the slow burn of a growing fire that has taken almost 14 full hours of television to explode.

House of the Dragon’s latest episode foreshadows one major battle
Daemon stands with his sword at the ready in House of the Dragon season 2.

In the latest episode of HBO's House of the Dragon, Daemon Targaryen's (Matt Smith) taking of Harrenhal doesn't go exactly as he planned. He successfully takes the castle, but there's little excitement to be found in his conquest. He arrives atop the cursed fortress astride his dragon, Caraxes, only to find the castle largely deserted -- save for a few workers and its castellan, Lord Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale), who immediately surrenders Harrenhal to Daemon without protest.

While still at Harrenhal, Daemon experiences an unsettling vision. Drawn to a fire-lit room by the sound of a distant woman's hums, Daemon eventually finds himself face to face again with a younger version of Rhaenyra (returning season 1 star Milly Alcock). "Always coming and going, aren't you? And I have to clean up afterwards," Rhaenyra remarks, all while sewing the head of Prince Jaehaerys, the young boy who was decapitated as a result of Daemon's orders in the House of the Dragon season 2 premiere, back onto his body.

The second episode of House of the Dragon season 2 begins, as it should, in chaos. As the news of Prince Jaehaerys' murder spreads throughout the Red Keep of King's Landing, bed maidens and castle workers are detained, all while Jaehaerys' father, Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), rages over his son's death, and members of his Small Council -- namely, Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) -- brainstorm over how to respond to the tragic event. The Hightowers, as cunning as ever, decide to use Jaehaerys' assassination to their political advantage by parading the boy's dead body through the streets as part of a funeral procession and denouncing his murder as an act of wanton cruelty on the part of Aegon's rival, Rhaenyra (Emmy D'Arcy).
