Is Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU?

Robert Downey Jr. recently picked up his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Oppenheimer. But just because Downey has enjoyed continued success beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it doesn’t mean that he would turn down a chance to reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the future.

During a new interview with Esquire, Downey reiterated his willingness to work with Marvel again.

“Happily,” said Downey. “It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”

Of course, there is a big complication that might make Downey’s return difficult. Tony Stark died in Avengers: Endgame during the final battle with Thanos and memorably had a well-attended funeral near the conclusion of the film. Given Marvel’s recent multiverse movies, it’s within the realm of possibility that Downey could play a different version of Iron Man. But Marvel’s Kevin Feige has previously indicated that he doesn’t want to undo Iron Man’s grand sacrifice.

“We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” Feige told Vanity Fair in December 2023. “We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”

There was also a report last year that Marvel is attempting to bring back all of the original Avengers stars, in part to turn around the company’s recent struggles at the box office. Since then, there have been no further rumblings about the subject.

Avengers 5, formerly known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, will hit theaters on May 1, 2026.

Marvel Studios rocked the internet when it revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that Doctor Doom would be the new villain of the fifth and sixth Avengers films, which will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. If that wasn't surprising enough, they also revealed that Robert Downey Jr., who had long portrayed the hero Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would return to play the iconic villain.
This news has many enormous implications for the MCU, with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty being rebranded as Avengers: Doomsday. While Marvel fans hold their breath in anticipation of this blockbuster event, let's look at what could happen in the next Avengers film.

Just how much money will Robert Downey Jr. get for the next Avengers movies?
Robert Downey Jr. stares coldly in Avengers: Endgame.

At the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel announced the returns of Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers for the next two Avengers films. Downey will play Victor Von Doom, while the Russo Brothers will direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Getting the band back together won't be cheap. According to Variety, Marvel will pay the Russo Brothers $80 million to direct two Avengers films. While the deal does not include back-end compensation, there are performance bonuses for reaching the $750 million and $1 billion thresholds. The Russos' last two offerings for Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, each grossed over $2 billion.

10 most popular MCU movies, ranked (by worldwide box office gross)
Three Spider-Men come in for a landing in "Spider-Man: No Way Home."

In 2009, Disney purchased Marvel for only $4.4 billion, which seemed undervalued at the time. Considering that Marvel Studios films have now brought in over $34 billion, the price that Disney paid for Marvel seems exceptionally cheap. Deadpool & Wolverine's $444 million opening weekend is only going to push that $34 billion total up, but will it be enough for the film to break into the top 10 most popular MCU movies?

Although not every Marvel movie is a blockbuster, all 10 of the highest-grossing MCU films have made over $1 billion. By comparison, Deadpool and Deadpool 2 only made $782 million and $785 million, respectively. Those two films were produced by 20th Century Fox prior to Disney's purchase of that company. So far, Deadpool & Wolverine appears to have a shot at $1 billion if its momentum doesn't slow down. Until that happens, the following films are the 10 most popular MCU movies ranked by worldwide box office gross.
