Mary Elizabeth Winstead joins the cast of Star Wars: Ahsoka

The Book of Boba Fett may be currently streaming on Disney+, but the next chapter in the Star Wars saga has lined up its latest cast member. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mary Elizabeth Winstead has signed on to appear in the Star Wars: Ahsoka miniseries. Details about Winstead’s role were not disclosed, so we don’t know whether she will be friend or foe to Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano, but her presence will probably make fans very happy.

Winstead has a lot of genre roles in her previous credits, including a leading part as Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. More recently, she portrayed Huntress in DC’s Birds of Prey movie in 2020. Additionally, Winstead has starred in 10 Cloverfield Lane, Fargo season 3, The Returned, Death Proof, Live Free or Die Hard, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

THR‘s report also indicates that Hayden Christensen is reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker from the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Christensen has already filmed his role for the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries. Within the lore of Star Wars, Anakin was Ahoska’s Jedi master before he turned to the dark side and became Darth Vader.

Ahsoka is a fan-favorite heroine who is one of the first characters to make the leap from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series to a live-action project. Dawson took over the role of Ahsoka for a guest appearance in season 2 of The Mandalorian. Shortly thereafter, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Dawson would headline the Ahsoka miniseries.

Thus far, the only other confirmed cast members are Ivanna Sakhno and Natasha Liu Bordizzo. Lucasfilm has declined to reveal Sakhno’s character, but Bordizzo will portray Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian heroine who debuted on the Star Wars Rebels animated series. Ahsoka also had a supporting role on that show, and the final episode linked Sabine and Ahsoka as they decided to go looking for their missing friend, Ezra Miller.

Dawson’s lone appearance on The Mandalorian may have set up the miniseries when it was revealed that she is looking for Grand Admiral Thrawn, an adversary who was with Ezra when they were lost in a hyperspace jump. Lucasfilm and Disney are rumored to be casting the role of Ezra, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Andor season 2 is coming sooner than a lot of Star Wars fans thought

It looks like Lucasfilm may have accidentally revealed the long-awaited premiere date for Andor season 2, and on the Disney+ mobile app, no less. Early Saturday morning, some eagle-eyed users noticed a new date attached to the bottom of the app's Andor streaming tile. The date in question promises that Andor season 2 is coming April 22, 2025.

It isn't just possible but likely that this Disney+ update was made earlier than Lucasfilm planned. Not only was it added to the streaming service's mobile app with no accompanying announcement or comment from Lucasfilm, but Disney is also in the midst of hosting its D23 Brazil convention this weekend. The event has already given fans their first look at Diego Luna's Cassian Andor in Andor season 2, and it's possible that the show's return date was being saved for D23 Brazil as well.

Few Star Wars characters have a story as well-known or important as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The character, first introduced as an older Jedi in 1977's Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope, is both a noteworthy mentor to Luke and Anakin Skywalker and a tragic figure due to the dissolution of his friendship with the latter. Thanks to Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness' dual, decades-spanning performances as the character, Obi-Wan's story has been brought to life in almost its entirety over the years, too.

However, it turns out that Star Wars creator George Lucas originally had a very different idea for Obi-Wan Kenobi's story. In an interview with StarWars.com, Iain McCaig, who worked as a behind-the-scenes artist on Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, revealed that Lucas originally intended to swap the names of Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi and Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn in that film. "It’s interesting how things evolve,” McCaig commented. “For a time, the older Jedi was named Obi-Wan and the younger Jedi was named Qui-Gon."

Disney+ has dropped a lot of coal in the stockings of subscribers who were used to a full-service streamer prior to this year. Even now, much of the content in the Disney+ December lineup is shared with Hulu, including the first 20 seasons of Law & Order, the horror film Cuckoo, and the action series Paris Has Fallen. What's the point of having two streaming services — even in a Disney bundle — if they're already sharing content?

Thankfully, Disney+ is also bringing some Christmas gifts in December to serve as a reminder of why this streamer was once considered the best alternative to Netflix. Where else are you going to get a new Star Wars series (Skeleton Crew), the third season of Marvel Studios' animated show What If...?, a new Doctor Who Christmas special, and an Elton John special? Those are the kind of things that make Disney+ worth the money, rather than a warmed-over Hulu alternative. Disney+ should spend 2025 embracing the idea of actually giving people the special content that they signed up for in the first place.
