Netflix debuts full trailer for Andy Serkis’ ‘Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle’

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

Andy Serkis is already well-known for his acclaimed (and arguably, Oscar-worthy) work as a performance-capture actor, but he goes behind the camera for his latest, big-budget feature, an adaptation of The Jungle Book that he directs. Netflix has released the first, full-length trailer for Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle ahead of its premiere later this year.

Directed by Serkis from a script penned by Callie Kloves, Mowgli promises to be a “much darker” spin on the classic tale of an orphaned boy raised in the jungles of India by a host of animals, only to be forced to decide between the world of man and that of the jungle. The film mixes live-action performance with performance-capture acting as it tells the tale of Mowgli’s journey from “man cub” to young adult, and the dangers he faces as he grows into his humanity and must walk the line between the wilds of the jungle and man’s domain.

Like Jon Favreau’s 2016 film that was also based on The Jungle BookMowgli features an all-star ensemble cast portraying the jungle’s inhabitants, including Christian Bale as the panther Bagheera, Serkis as the bear Baloo, Cate Blanchett as the snake Kaa, Naomie Harris as the wolf Nisha, and Benedict Cumberbatch as the terrifying tiger Shere Khan. Young actor Rohan Chand plays Mowgli in the film.

Serkis has indicated that Mowgli will set itself apart from Favreau’s adaptation of the story with a darker version of the story, and the trailer seems to indicate that it will cover quite a bit of different territory — particularly involving the local community of humans — than the 2016 film. The film was co-produced by Serkis and Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves, and Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) reportedly provided notes on the project as an adviser.

Originally scheduled for release in October 2016, the film was later pushed back in order to continue work on the visual effects and create some space between it and Favreau’s feature for Disney. Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle will now have a limited theatrical release that begins November 29, which will be followed by the film’s streaming premiere December 7 on Netflix.

BioShock Netflix film unites Logan and I Am Legend talent
A Big Daddy stands tall in Bioshock.

Bioshock's live-action Netflix film adaptation had attracted some top talent. The streaming giant took to Twitter today to reveal that the director of I Am Legend and the writer behind films like Logan and Blade Runner 2049 would handle the film adaptation.
The director is Francis Lawrence, who is known for directing 2000s cult classics Constantine and I Am Legend. More recently, he directed the last three films based on The Hunger Games and is currently filming the prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes. Hopefully, his experience with making films with horror undertones and adapting popular pieces of media serve the scary aspects of this BioShock film well.

The BioShock film's writer is Michael Green. He is credited as a writer on such films as Logan, Blade Runner 2049, and Death on the Nile. His track record isn't perfect because of subpar films like Green Lantern and Alien Covenant, but Green clearly knows how to write for famous pop culture properties. Hopefully, he has the chops to adapt Ken Levine's chilling and iconic story into something special.
Although video game movies have a reputation for being bad or very risky projects, more notable directors have slowly attached themselves to video game-related projects recently. John Wick series director Chad Stahelski is currently slated to direct the Ghost of Tsushima film, and now a pretty notable director and an experienced writer will adapt the critically lauded BioShock into a live-action feature film.
Hopefully, this pans out well. The BioShock film does not have a release window.

Netflix debuts the trailer for Mike Myers’ The Pentaverate
Mike Meyers in The Pentaverate.

Mike Myers' 1993 dark romantic comedy So I Married An Axe Murderer is perhaps one of the most unlikely films to ever get a cinematic universe. But anything goes in 2022, especially in the age of streaming. Nearly three decades after the film's release, Myers has created a spinoff series for Netflix called The Pentaverate, which is based upon the conspiracy theories mentioned in the movie. In this show, the Pentaverate are the secret rulers of the world, and almost all of them are played by Myers himself!

That's not an exaggeration either. Myers will portray eight different characters on the show. That includes Pentaverate members Lord Lordington, Bruce Baldwin, Mishu Ivanov, and Shep Gordon. He is also playing a tech genius named Jason Eccleston, a far-right radio host named Rex Smith, and a conspiracy theorist named Anthony Lansdowne. But Myers' biggest role appears to be Ken Scarborough, a washed-up Canadian journalist who gets the chance of a lifetime to expose the Pentaverate.

Heartstopper trailer shows Netflix’s next big romantic series
The cast of Heartstopper.

Later this month, Netflix is turning traditional teenage coming-of-age shows on their head with Heartstopper, an LGBT love story that tackles romance in an unexpected way. In the first trailer for the series, viewers meet Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), a very geeky and gay teenager who hasn't found anyone to return his romantic love. And yet sparks fly almost immediately when Charlie meets Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). Nick is almost everything Charlie isn't, including athletic, popular, and heterosexual.

The gulf between Charlie and Nick's desires seems so insurmountable that Charlie actually asks one of his friends how he can stop feeling so strongly about Nick. And while Nick may not realize it, he appears to have feelings for Charlie too. He even invites Charlie to join him on the rugby team, even though sports and Charlie looks like a bad mix. It's ambiguous at the moment if Nick made that request just as an excuse to spend more time with Charlie.
