Godzilla Minus One (2023)

GODZILLA MINUS ONE Official Trailer 2

You might not think that a prequel to the original Godzilla would be worth checking out, especially if it came out decades after the original. Godzilla Minus One exists to prove us wrong, though. The movie follows a World War II veteran who returns to a decimated Japan and finds himself face-to-face with Godzilla.

In addition to riveting action from front to back, Godzilla Minus One has a remarkably sturdy emotional core. It’s the story of men who feel betrayed by their country and decide to take their fates into their own hands by battling on behalf of the people they love.

Starring Jamie Foxx, John Boyega, and Teyonah Parris, the film focuses on three people who find themselves unexpectedly hot on the heels of a government conspiracy.

A man laughs while fire surrounds him in "Nosferatu."

Has 2024 been a great year for movies? The general consensus right now seems to be that it definitely hasn't been a bad one, but whether 2024 will be looked back on in 10 years as a banner year for Hollywood seems like a slim possibility right now. It's been a year punctuated by a lot of alright or pretty-good movies, with a few gems emerging as the best among a batch of mid-tier titles. If one genre has thrived in 2024, though, it's undoubtedly horror.

Over the past 12 months, genre fans have been treated to a diverse and bold lineup of new horror movies. Some films, like M. Night Shyamalan's Trap and Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus, have been fun, low-stakes big-screen horror experiences, while others, like Cuckoo and In a Violent Nature, have taken unforgettable creative swings. Of everything that it's had to offer, here are the eight best horror movies that 2024 has given us.

This great sci-fi comic book should be Netflix’s next hit binge-worthy show. Here’s why
nice house by the lake next great netflix show on 8

Netflix gets a bad rap these days, and some of it is justified. The Reed Hastings-led company helped usher in the Steaming Age that, for better and worse, has totally transformed the entertainment industry. Old metrics of success, like making money at the box office, don't necessarily apply anymore. Now, it's also all about grabbing as many eyeballs as possible and letting an algorithm dictate almost every creative decision.

The criticism about Netflix is justified, but the streamer has also done good things. (I swear!) It's given home to odd, idiosyncratic works like The Power of the Dog, Martin Scorsese's epic drama The Irishman, and Sam Esmail's apocalyptic end-of-the-world (or is it?) film Leave the World Behind. It has particularly excelled at making and distributing exceptional genre shows like the great League of Legends cyberpunk show Arcane, the superb German time-travel series Dark, and any one of Mike Flanagan's deeply emotional, and intensely scary, horror programs.
