Spider-Man is finally coming home to Marvel Studios. The Disney-owned company has struck a deal with Spidey film rights-holder Sony Pictures Entertainment that will see the wall-crawler introduced in an upcoming, unspecified release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony will then continue on with its own Spider-Man movie, set for release on July 28, 2017, but it’ll be the product of a creative union between Marvel and Sony, with the former’s Kevin Feige and the latter’s Amy Pascal co-producing.

The two will collaborate on “a new creative direction for the web slinger,” according to Marvel. Given Feige’s involvement and Spidey’s now-confirmed appearance in an upcoming MCU release, it’s clear that the beloved superhero’s solo efforts will be folded into the larger timeline that Marvel first established in 2008’s Iron Man. It’s worth noting, however, that Sony “will continue to finance, own, and have final creative control” of those films.

Fans should also note that Marvel intends to work with Sony on finding ways to bring MCU characters into Spider-Man films. The announcement makes mention of Sony’s “$4 billion Spider-Man franchise,” suggesting that some or all of the plans for spin-offs, including confirmed Sinister Six and Venom films, remain in place. Variety reports that, under the terms of the deal, Spidey franchise star Andrew Garfield will be re-cast.

“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,” said Feige, Marvel Studios’ president, in a prepared statement. “Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”

When is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse streaming?
Miles Morales falls through a multiverse portal in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."

It took almost five years, but the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse finally arrived and was one of the top hits of the summer. And Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is everything you could hope for from a follow-up -- and more. It has a much bigger scale than the first film, with literally hundreds of Spider-Heroes, at least five distinct animated worlds, and a ton of heart that made this sequel a huge success.

The incredible visuals got people into theaters, but the characters are the reasons why moviegoers kept coming back to see it. Shameik Moore reprises his role as Miles Morales, a teenage Spider-Man who has a lot of questions about his future. Also returning from the first film is Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, New Girl's Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, and Causeway's Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Vélez as Miles' parents, Jefferson and Rio Morales, both of whom have much meatier roles in the sequel.

Why you should watch The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Netflix
Andrew Garfield in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

This month, Netflix has welcomed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 back to its lineup, and it has quickly become one of the most popular movies on Netflix. That makes this the perfect opportunity to tell you why you should watch The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Netflix.

Now, we would never argue that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the best Spider-Man film or even a great one. It's got a lot of problems, including a truly grotesque Green Goblin design, a very unconvincing performance by Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, and a take on Electro (Jamie Foxx) that feels like it was lifted directly from Batman Forever. This film also tries so hard to set up an MCU-style Spider-Man universe that it wildly underperformed at the box office and led Sony Pictures to partner directly with Marvel Studios for the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man flicks.
