‘The Walking Dead’ season 8 premiere date announced ahead of Comic-Con

Given how chaotic the news cycle gets during Comic-Con International in San Diego, it makes sense that AMC chose the day before the big show kicks off to announce The Walking Dead season 8 premiere date.

The hit series based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book series of the same name will return October 22 on AMC. The season 8 premiere date was revealed via the network’s San Diego Comic-Con promotional art that debuted ahead of the convention’s Wednesday “Preview Night” events.

The art spotlights the looming war between Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his makeshift army of survivors and the heavily armed Saviors led by the brutal Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). The previous season’s finale had Rick and the leaders of several other communities terrorized by the Saviors marshaling their forces after a rare victory, and looking ahead to the violent conflict on the horizon.

The news regarding the season premiere of The Walking Dead was accompanied by an announcement of the return of the spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead. Currently in the middle of its third season, Fear the Walking Dead follows another group of survivors on the opposite side of the country, similarly dealing with the aftermath of the zombie outbreak.

Fear the Walking Dead will return for the ninth episode of the third season on September 10.

The announcement of the show’s return was made in similar fashion to The Walking Dead premiere date, with a piece of promotional art created for San Diego Comic-Con revealing the series’ scheduled return.

Both series will be the focus of a Comic-Con panel event held Friday in San Diego. While the cast and creative teams for each series will certainly be in attendance, there is also likely to be some talk of the recent death of a stuntman, which occurred last week.

Collectively, the two series have earned a wide range of awards and nominations, with The Walking Dead nominated in the “Best Television Series — Drama” category at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards, and winning two Primetime Emmy Awards from the 15 nominations it received over the course of its first six seasons.

In November 2022, The Walking Dead fans were sad to see the long-running series come to an end after 11 seasons. But less than a year later, two popular characters have returned in The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Against the new setting of New York, the story follows Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), and their reluctant journey together to save Maggie's son, Hershel (Logan Kim), who has been kidnapped by someone from Negan’s past. There are just six episodes in the first season. The ending, and the second season renewal, confirm that The Walking Dead’s notorious barbed-wire bat-wielding villain and badass mom aren’t going anywhere, though there’s still no love lost between them.

San Diego Comic-Con 2023 was a quieter affair than usual. Because studios refuse to pay their actors and writers what they deserve, the ongoing SAG/AFTRA and WGA strikes continue, halting most ongoing productions and preventing talent from promoting their current or upcoming projects. Still, Comic-Con weathered the storm by pivoting back to its original raison d'etre: comic books. That's not to say a few movies and shows didn't make the cut, although the focus was firmly away from Hollywood and back into print.

Comic-Con was once the pinnacle of pop culture; alas, it has lost some of its luster, especially after the pandemic and amidst an increasingly erratic entertainment industry. The 2023 iteration didn't do much to return it to its once mighty place, but it provided enough interesting announcements to keep it in the conversation, at least until next year. And although only a handful of intriguing announcements came out of Comic-Con 2023, they are exciting enough to keep fans invested in the long-running and revered convention.

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1, episode 1 release date, time, channel, and plot

The Walking Dead franchise is forcing two unlikely allies to team up in its latest spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City. Lauren Cohan reprises her role as Maggie Green, the longtime main group member and widow of Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun). Jeffrey Dean Morgan is Negan, the once-ruthless leader of the Saviors who eventually reformed and joined forces with the main group. What makes Maggie and Negan an improbable duo? Negan beat Glenn to death with a barbed baseball bat named Lucille.

Several years after the events of The Walking Dead finale, Maggie now finds herself in a dire situation. Her son has been kidnapped and taken to postapocalyptic and secluded Manhattan. While attempting a rescue, Maggie stumbles upon Negan. Negan agrees to help the desperate Maggie find her son in Manhattan. A Walking Dead show means zombies are not far behind, as Manhattan is full of the dead. Yet, it's those that are still alive who may pose the biggest threat.
