Pain & Gain (2013)

A man puts his hands against someone's head sitting down.
Paramount Pictures

Michael Bay’s movies are loud, explosive, and action-packed. In other words, “Bayhem.” Pain & Gain is not that. It’s Bay’s attempt at a satirical black comedy. Set in 1990s Miami, Danny Lupo (Mark Wahlberg), Paul Doyle (Red One‘s Dwayne Johnson), and Adrian ‘Noel’ Doorbal (Anthony Mackie) are three juiceheads who plan to extort businessman Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub) and secure his millions in assets.

Surprisingly, the plan works, and the trio begins living extravagant lifestyles. There’s only one problem: the trio failed to kill Kershaw, who somehow survives the assassination attempt. Can these musclemen dig themselves out of another situation? Most cinephiles will likely prefer Bay’s action movies over the violent Pain & Gain. However, it’s definitely an intriguing entry in Bay’s canon.

Hunter Killer (2018)

Gerard Butler stands behind his crew.
Lionsgate

In his quest to star in every 1990s-style action movie, Gerard Butler enters the waters of submarine warfare in Hunter Killer. While navigating Russian waters, the USS Tampa Bay submarine disappears. Commander Joe Glass (Butler) of the USS Arkansas is sent to investigate. On land, a group of Navy SEALS are sent to a Russian naval base to observe in secret.

The Americans eventually learn that a secret Russian coup is in the works, with the defense minister overthrowing the president. Forced to fight this battle on land and sea, the Navy must rescue the Russian president before it leads to World War III.

Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)

Al Pacino and Jack Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross.
New Line Cinema

The movie that taught audiences about coffee being for closers is Glengarry Glen Ross, James Foley’s drama based on David Mamet’s award-winning play. Set in the competitive world of New York City real estate, four salesmen — Shelley Levene (Jack Lemmon), Ricky Roma (Al Pacino), Dave Moss (Ed Harris), and George Aaronow (Alan Arkin) — compete to become the company’s top closer.

The quartet learns that in one week only the top two salesmen will keep their jobs. Everyone else will be fired. Backed into a corner, the men are forced to rely on shady, sometimes nefarious, tactics to secure strong leads that will hopefully lead to sales. Backed by Mamet’s sensational dialogue and strong performances, Glengarry Glen Ross is one of the shining examples of a successful feature film adaptation of a play.
