The First Time (2012)

Lionsgate

Remember what it was like to fall in love as a teenager? 2012’s The First Time is one of the more sincere and accurate depictions of young love in a movie. Written and directed by Jon Kasdan, The First Time stars Dylan O’Brien as Dave and Britt Robertson as Aubrey Miller. Dave, a high school senior, is practicing a speech to impress his crush when he meets Audrey, a junior at a neighboring high school, outside of a party.

Dave and Audrey spend the night talking about high school, love, and sex as they are both virgins. Audrey also has an older, immature boyfriend. For one weekend, Dave and Audrey form a loving connection and experience what it’s like to fall in love for the first time.

The Next Three Days (2010)

Two people walk in the park in The Next Three Days.
Lionsgate

Lara Brennan (Elizabeth Banks, director of 2023’s Cocaine Bear) is sentenced to life in prison for a murder she did not commit. Three years later, Lara’s appeal fails, leaving her with no other option but to accept her fate, leading her to a failed suicide attempt. Desperate to save his wife, Lara’s husband, John (Russell Crowe), decides to break her out of prison. John meets with a former inmate (Liam Neeson, staying from his usual action movie hero mode) who successfully escaped prison multiple times to see if it’s possible.

Over the next three months, John meticulously plans the prison break, from studying the guards’ routines to buying fake passports and a gun. The Next Three Days is not a perfect movie, but Banks and Crowe elevate the material to provide an exciting prison break with a thrilling final act.

Before Taylor Sheridan became the prominent showrunner for Paramount+, he was writing excellent films, like Sicario and the Academy Award-nominated Hell or High Water. However, his second directorial effort, Wind River, finds a place on the underrated list.

Cory Lambert (Hawkeye‘s Jeremy Renner), a wildlife officer, finds the frozen body of a young teenager on the Wind River Indian Reservation. FBI Special Agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) arrives to investigate the death, discovering the girl was beaten and raped before succumbing to the wintery conditions. Lambert and Banner team up to catch the murderer, but as they quickly learn, the people behind the murder do not want the truth to get out.

3 great Tubi movies to watch on Christmas
A man in a fireman's coat and a cop stand and look at each other.

The prices of streaming services are getting out of control. Nearly every major streaming service, from Netflix and Peacock to Hulu and Paramount+, increased their prices in 2024. Unfortunately, that trend will likely continue into 2025 as the streaming wars intensify. Pretty soon, consumers will have to consolidate and choose only one service to pay for and abandon the rest.

Wouldn't it be great to receive free movies for Christmas? Luckily, this idea of streaming free movies exists on FAST services, or free ad-supported television. Thousands of movies are available to stream at no cost to consumers. Each movie includes a few ads to watch, but that's it. Tubi is one of the best FAST services on the market. Download Tubi now and enjoy one of these three Christmas movies.

Have you defied gravity yet? If not, you're one of the few who haven't. Wicked is a genuine phenomenon right now, and one of the leading contenders for next year's Oscars. But I haven't taken a trip to Oz yet simply because there's too much good stuff on streaming right now.

That's especially true for Max, which has great films from the present to the distant past. (Yes, they even have 1939's The Wizard of Oz.) If you have a craving for movies that don't contain evil witches, pink-colored princesses, or flying monkeys, well, this list is for you. These movies may have Nazis, porn stars, and real-life artists, but they are all united by their ability to entertain and even enlighten.

What's new on Tubi this month? All three Rush Hour movies, including the original, are now streaming. All have funny moments, but Rush Hour is the best one. If you thought Bring It On was the only film about cheerleading, think again. Bring It On and its five sequels are available to stream. After the original, watch the franchise's best sequel, Bring It On: All Or Nothing.

What's great about Tubi is that access to its extensive library does not cost a dime. Tubi is a FAST service — free ad-supported streaming. Download the app and watch thousands of movies and TV shows for free. The trade-off is ads will run during each program. If you're new to Tubi, start in the action genre and watch one of these three films: a dystopian thriller, an underseen reboot, and a 1980s classic.
