Srividya Felt 'Her Life Was Over' After Breaking Up With Lover Kamal Haasan: 'I Was Blank...'
Kamal Haasan was married to Vani Ganapathy and Sarika Thakur, and had a notable relationship with late actor Srividya. Srividya once discussed their breakup on a public platform.

While Kamal Haasan is one of the biggest names in the pan-Indian film industry, he’s had his share of multiple linkup rumours. The Vishwaroop actor married Indian classical dancer Vani Ganapathy in 1978, only to part ways after 10 years, in 1988. Later, he tied the knot with actor Sarika Thakur in 1988. That ended up in a divorce in 2004. However, one prominent name that emerges when one mentions his romantic relationships is late actor Srividya. She had once publicly acknowledged how heartbroken she was after breaking up with Haasan.
Srividya, in a throwback interview with Kairali TV, shared how breaking up with Kamal Haasan left her devastated. “I was blank initially; I felt that my life was over," she said. She stated that their love story was well known, not just to their families but to the entire film industry. She said their families wanted them to marry, also noting that she was six months older than the actor.

Srividya reminisced that Kamal Haasan had asked her to wait for him, but she was unwilling to go against her family’s wishes. “I did not want to do anything against the wishes of our families. He flared up asking if that was my final decision. He left and did not even call me for quite some time. Then one day, he came over to our house. Seeing us, my mother approached and asked if she could express her opinion on the matter. She said, ‘Why don’t you two wait for 4-5 years? You seem to be very sure of yourself. Kamal, you are supposed to become a great artiste. You are going to become one of the greatest heroes in this industry. She too is talented and has the potential to become big. Eventually, you guys might come across even better people. At that time, you shouldn’t regret your current decisions. You both are only 22 now; why rush things? I think it is too young an age to get married.’ She was very correct," Srividya expressed.
However, this didn’t go down well with Kamal. He was furious upon hearing this and left the spot. Their breakup was final, and soon after, Kamal married Vani Ganapathy. “I was deeply hurt. I felt like a failure as a woman. I kept thinking, ‘What does she have that I don’t?’ Although we never became close friends afterwards, we always maintained a cordial relationship," Srividya reflected.
That’s not all. Kamal Haasan, too, once openly addressed his past relationship with Srividya, referring to her as his former “lover". On Koffee with DD on Vijay TV, he was shown a still from Apoorva Raagangal (1975), where he and Srividya played a romantic pair in K Balachander’s film, which also introduced Rajinikanth to cinema. “While acting in this movie, I was 19. I don’t know whether the love we portrayed on screen spilt over into real life or not. But it remains in my heart even now. A relationship doesn’t have to culminate in marriage for it to be meaningful," Haasan had said.
For the unversed, Srividya died in 2006 after a long battle with cancer.
